Long prior to its Birkin grew into the worldwide phenomenon, Hermes created a Haut à Courroies, more commonly referred to as HAC bag. This name means as “tall straps”, while the bag stands as commonly seen the ancestor to the famous Birkin.
The Remarkable Heritage Behind the Bag
Hermes began as equestrian workshop in the 1800s, and its HAC had been originally made near those 1890s to help horsemen who needed to carry riding gear plus footwear. The deep body and elevated handles kept it practical for trips. Generations on, the same design shaped a more compact Birkin bag, which appeared in 1984.

Defining Characteristics in an HAC Bag
An HAC carries several details with the Birkin, such as the flap, straps, lock hardware, padlock, and key bell. However, the bag sits noticeably higher, with a more pronounced tapered silhouette plus longer straps. This lends the bag a more utilitarian yet refined feel.
Sizes & Variations
An HAC typically comes across larger formats than many Birkins, commonly such as 32 cm, 36 cm, 40 cm, and sometimes bigger voyage versions. The 32 or 36 models serve well as everyday carrying, whereas the larger versions suit weekend getaways.
Popular Leathers
Hermès produces the HAC in an variety of hides. Togo leather and Clémence leather remain top picks for their durability and supple grain. Firmer leathers like Epsom leather retain shape firmly, and exotic skins and fabric combinations additionally exist over time to time.
Haut à Courroies compared to Birkin: Main Contrasts
While both designs look alike at a quick glance, a few details keep them different. An HAC stands taller with a slimmer upper section, while a Birkin looks boxier with an slightly more even shape. The HAC bag’s handles sit taller, letting it more comfortable for carry with the arm. Numerous collectors additionally see an HAC as more low-key choice, as less shoppers instantly spot the bag.
How You Can Buy an HAC
Similar to many other Hermès classics, the HAC bag remains not often shown freely in stores. Clients usually must develop a connection alongside a client advisor. One more route is the resale marketplace, where reliable resellers provide certified items. Consistently request certified authentication before buying a resale bag.
Is the HAC Bag Worth an Purchase?
To plenty of buyers, the HAC delivers the perfect mix of history, function, and craftsmanship. Its exclusivity helps to help support healthy resale prices, although values can change with size, shade, and market trends.
Concluding Remarks
An Hermès HAC is far more beyond simply an bigger Birkin bag. It represents a foundational masterpiece that began a legacy. For those who love heritage, practicality, plus understated elegance, an HAC earns a serious thought.
