Background / Content | One of the many fiery Philippine Jotas inspired by the Spaniards, this dances’ inaugural debut was the celebration of Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898. The military officials and soldiers who came to rejoice joined people in the streets who danced to brass band music. Thus, La Jota de Manila was born. The local dancers used elongated bamboo castanets to take the place of the traditional Spanish castanets. |
