Background / Content

Gran Batalla (Grand Battle) is a re-enactment of the war between Christians and Moors. In the northern province of Isabela, this mock battle takes over in the rice fields after the harvest. Certain families engage in the ensuing drama wherein the extended family members play the parts of the opposing protagonists. It is considered a “comedia”, a performance art akin to the touring troubadors of Western Europe in the middle ages. The performance is a vow rendered for thanksgiving.
