Bamboo noisemakers used by the Cuyunin men of Palawan who join the parade honoring the feast day of St. Augustine are called “karatong”. These are strapped on the waist and beat in synchopated rhythm while women dressed in multi-colored butterfly sleeved dresses and flowered hats sway boughs of “bunga-mangga” (coconut leaf midribs wrapped in colorful rice paper that are stuck in fist sized balls) which represent starbursts, are eye-catching and add to the very festive character of the parade.in tune with the beat of the karatong.
